MINERS SPLIT DOUBLE DUAL MEET WITH SMSU, TRUMAN
ROLLA, Mo. The University of Missouri-Rolla swimming team split a double dual meet Friday with Southwest Missouri State and Truman State, winning the meet over Truman but losing to Southwest.
The Miners had five winning performances in the meet, with Dave Belleville (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette) having a hand in three of them. Belleville, who has the second-best time in the nation in the 50-yard freestyle, won that event in a time of 21.57 seconds and also took the 100- freestyle in 46.93.
Later, Belleville anchored the Miners' 400-yard freestyle relay team that included David Nurre (Lewisville, Texas), Jeremy Evans (Bloomington, Ill.) and Mike Lach (Lenexa, Kan./Shawnee Mission West) that won in a time of 3:09.56.
The other Miner wins came from Ben Karstens (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge) in the 200- individual medley in 1:59.72, and from Bruno Amizic (Split, Croatia) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.57. Amizic has the best time in the nation this season in the 100-yard breaststroke.
UMR also had a second-place effort in the meet from Nurre in the 200-freestyle in 1:43.99, and thirds from Lach in the 50-freestyle (22.03), Nurre in the 100-freestyle (47.85), Karstens in the 200-backstroke (1:58.22), Steve Caruso (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) in the 200-IM in 2:00.93, and Vanja Dezelic (Zagreb, Croatia) in the 500-freestyle in 4:52.92.
The Miners' next competition will come at the Central State Championships, scheduled for Feb. 18-20 in Springfield, Mo.
