MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The final month of the 2001 season has been frustrating for the UMR women's soccer team. Sunday's season finale ended in that very manner.
Northwest Missouri State's Danielle Lawless scored 1:49 into the second overtime period, giving the Bearcats a 2-1 double overtime victory over UMR in the season finale for both teams.
The loss meant that the Lady Miners ended the year by going 0-7-1 in their last eight games. Even worse, they fell to sixth place in the final MIAA standings as the Bearcats were able to pass them with Sunday's win. Northwest (6-11-1, 4-7-1 MIAA) finished with 13 points to UMR's 11; the Lady Miners were 3-7-2 in the MIAA and 4-10-3 overall.
Northwest grabbed the lead midway through the first half when Sarah Wallace headed in a corner kick from Renee Judd at 25:30. The score remained that way until Lauren Wilkinson scored on a third attempt at Northwest goalkeeper Kathie Leach, a goal at 52:11 that evened the score at one.
The Lady Miners had 20 shots in the second half, but could not get another one past Leach as the game went into overtime.
Then, just moments after the second extra period started, Wallace made a cross to Lawless, who deposited a shot into the right corner to win the game for the Bearcats.
Each team had 26 shots in the game. UMR's Ana Mora was credited with nine saves.
