BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The hopes the Lady Miner soccer team had of finishing second in the MIAA standings got washed away in the rain Monday night in a loss to Missouri Southern. Now, UMR has put itself in a tough spot if it wants to finish third or even fourth.
The Lady Miners played to a 1-1 tie here Friday against a Southwest Baptist team that had yet to win in conference play -- and one that had been outscored 20-1 in the process in those six games. As a result, UMR missed a chance to pass Central Missouri State for third place prior to meeting the Jennies Saturday night at the UMR Soccer Complex.
UMR trails CMSU by one point in the standings (12-11) heading into Saturday's 6 p.m. game. Emporia State, with nine points, is still within striking distance as well. The Lady Miners will have three MIAA games left after Saturday's contest, but two of them are on the road and the home game is against conference leader Truman.
Needless to say, Saturday's game is a key game if UMR wants to finish in the top half of the MIAA standings this season.
In Friday's contest, UMR jumped out in front just 2:48 into the game when Tara Hammond's corner kick was put in by Maureen Cassin. That lead held up until the final minute of the first half, when Alyson Shea scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at one.
Neither team could break through in the remaining 45 minutes of regulation time or the 30 extra minutes of play.
UMR outshot Southwest Baptist 28-15. Ana Mora was credited with seven saves for the Lady Miners.
