ROLLA, Mo. -- The task to control Missouri Southern freshman Ashley Munnelly is tough enough under normal circumstances. But trying to do it while playing one player short can be even more difficult.

The Lady Miners found out Monday night, as Munnelly tied the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association single-game record with four goals in Missouri Southern's 4-2 comeback win on a rainy, 43-degree night at the UMR Soccer Complex. The Lady Lions swept the season series with Monday's win.

After the Lady Miners jumped out in front on two Tara Hammond goals in the first 10 minutes of play, Munnelly did all of the scoring for the rest of the night. She got the Lady Lions (8-5-1, 6-1 MIAA) on the board with just 1:25 left in the first half, when she dribbled around in the box, then let go of a shot that got by UMR goalkeeper Ana Mora.

UMR took that 2-1 lead into halftime, but just as the half ended, the Lady Miners' Beth Hayward was issued a red card that would put UMR in a shorthanded situation in the second half. After holding off the Lady Lions for better than 25 minutes, Munnelly scored twice in a span of 34 seconds to turn the deficit into a lead for Southern.

On a free kick, Stephanie Doerr put a ball in front of the net that Munnelly put in to tie the score at the 72:16 mark. Just moments later, at 72:50, Doerr's shot from way out was caught along the ground, but then apparently fumbled by Mora. An opportunistic Munnelly put the ball in to give the Lady Lions their first lead of the night.

Munnelly then tied the MIAA record by scoring on a penalty kick at 85:13. She forced the kick after getting a loose ball away from Mora and then got dragged down in the penalty box.

Hammond gave UMR the initial lead at 1:53 when she took a pass from Jessica Shultz on the wing and hit a shot from around the edge of the penalty area by Southern goalie Moe Ybarra. Hammond got her second tally by taking advantage of a misplay by the Southern defense, as a passback to Ybarra went right into a puddle on the field. Hammond then got past Ybarra and scored at 8:36.

Mora finished with 11 saves for UMR, who was outshot 28-7 in the game.

The Lady Miners (4-6-2, 3-3-1 MIAA) will play at Southwest Baptist Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
