JOPLIN, Mo. -- A one-goal game got away from the Lady Miner soccer team in the final eight minutes of play Friday, as a 2-1 deficit turned into a 4-1 loss for UMR at Missouri Southern.

The Lady Miners trailed by that 2-1 deficit at the half and was stymied in its attempt to rally, as Southern outshot the Lady Miners 12-5 in the second half. Finally, with 7:30 to play in the game, Katie Gaarder took a cross and put a shot past UMR goalie Ana Mora to increase the Lady Lions' lead to 3-1.

Ashley Munnelly, who scored with 3:11 left in the first half to give Missouri Southern the lead for good, added a goal with 31 seconds to go on a deflection to make the final margin.

Southern (4-4-1, 2-0 MIAA) scored its first goal just 5:22 into the game on Kaysie Griffin's goal. Libby Stephenson scored on an assist from Kacey Morris to tie the game at the 18:52 mark.

The Lady Lions outshot UMR 19-12. Mora was credited with 10 saves.

UMR (2-3-1, 1-1-1 MIAA) returns to action Sunday when it plays at Central Missouri State. Game time will be 2 p.m.
