ROLLA, Mo. -- For the first 65 minutes or so, the UMR soccer team looked like a squad that had not played a game in 11 days -- missed scoring chances, flat and erratic play at the outset, etc.

But once Mark Nammari broke the ice, the Miners were able to rally and get past Avila 3-2 Thursday night at the UMR Soccer Complex.

Trailing 2-0 in the game's 69th minute, Nammari tapped a feed from Greg Naslund into an open net to get the Miners on the board. Just under seven minutes later, the Miners tied the game when after a corner kick, Chris Shaw put a pass in front that Jeff Leonard headed in at 75:26 to even the score at two.

The Miners completed the rally at 82:49, when Luke Enna -- who had just missed scoring the go-ahead goal just moments earlier on a free kick -- converted another attempt from near the top of the penalty box to give UMR a 3-2 lead.

The Miners outshot the Eagles (11-3-1) 24-5 in the game, but missed a number of good scoring chances throughout the early stages of the game. Despite having just five shots, Avila was able to score on two of its first three to get the two-goal advantage.

Michael Johnson scored at 10:26 on a shot that appeared to initially deflect off a UMR defender and slipped past goalkeeper Todd Wilfling. Then only 1:42 into the second half, the Miners failed to convert a corner kick and on the counterattack, Aaron Weaver was fouled in the Miners' penalty area. Avery Abernathy made the penalty kick to make it 2-0.

Avila goalkeeper Nicholas Baum, who had been aggressive in coming out of the goal all night, was finally victimized when he tried to get to a ball out near the 18-yard line. However, Naslund beat him to the ball and knocked the pass into Nammari, who then had an open net to shoot at to give UMR its first goal and a spark to the rally.

Wilfling was credited with three saves in goal for the Miners.

UMR will take a 7-4-1 record into Saturday's game at Missouri Southern. Game time will be 7 p.m.
