The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.

Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis (1995). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season. IPFW left the GLVC following the 2000-01 academic year.

The 2005-06 expansion also included Drury University and Rockhurst University.

The GLVC can claim schools in all of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), St. Louis (SIU Edwardsville/UM-St. Louis), Springfield (Drury) and Kansas City (Rockhurst).

The Missouri S&T swimming team will join up with other schools as part of the New South Championships starting in the 2005-06 school year, while the football team will compete as an NCAA Division II independent in the upcoming season. The football team will be a member of the Great Lakes Football Conference, which will begin competing for championships in 2007.

Missouri S&T'S NCAA Regional Affiliations

Missouri S&T is a member of NCAA Division II in all 14 of its varsity sports. It competes as an independent in football and swimming, while competing in the GLVC in the other 12 sports.

Missouri S&T teams are aligned in the Great Lakes region for all national competition with the exception of football, where it competes in the Southwest region. There is no regional affiliation for NCAA championship competition in men's and women's track and swimming.
