Picking up where they left off

Winona State's John Smith was named as the Most Outstanding Player as the Warriors claimed the 2006 NCAA Division II title.

(Oct. 13): Winona State won its last 22 games a year ago to win its first NCAA Division II national championship. And if the pre-season rankings are an indication of things to come, the Warriors may find themselves on the top step of the awards stand again in March in Springfield, Mass.

Division II Bulletin and Street and Smith's have tabbed the Warriors as the No. 1 team in Division II in the pre-season as they return practically the entire team that claimed the title last year. Led by junior John Smith, the most outstanding player at the 2006 Elite Eight, the Warriors look for a repeat.

The Street and Smith's rankings have Barton -- who lost to Winona State in overtime in the Elite Eight quarterfinals -- at No. 2, followed by another E8 participant, SIU Edwardsville, Nebraska-Kearney and Grand Valley State. The Warriors are followed in the Division II Bulletin rankings by a quartet of teams that made their way to Springfield last year, Montevallo, Tarleton State, SIUE and Seattle Pacific.

Practice opens Sunday for teams across the country and exhibition games -- many against NCAA Division I competition -- will begin later this month.

The NABC coaches pre-season poll will be released in early November.
