ACS Council Report

Hilton Hotel, San Francisco, California
September 13, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. by President Nalley.

Council chose members to serve on its elected committees: Committees on Committees, Council Policy Committees, and Nominations and Elections. (Note: I assisted in oversight of the ballot counting during part of this meeting.)

The membership will select from four candidates for President-Elect (Bursten, Shakhashiri, Rhodes, and Walsh, the last two being petition candidates) in the Fall. The slates for Director-at-Large (chosen by Councilors), District II, and District V (our district) were also announced. Members in our District will select between Judith Benham (3M, incumbent) and John Adams (Missouri-- Columbia).

The status of the Committee on Community Activities was changed from a Committee of the Board of Directors to a Joint-Board-Council Committee.

The Committee on Budget and Finance projected that the year will close with $7.9 M net to reserves or $3.5 M favorable to budget. The Committee also voted to support the Green Chemistry Institute ($436 k) and CPT Workshop with Hispanic and Native American Institute ($98 k).

The Committee on Education (SOCED) discussed the high school chemistry program at the National Meeting.

The Committee on Science reported on the four programs it supported at the San Francisco meeting.

President Nalley reported on a study of the demographics of the Society, participation in volunteerism, and governance of the Society.

A record 2,137 applicants to the Society were received this year. This is a record number. Membership Affairs supported the ideas that the qualifications for membership be broadened and that student members have voting rights.

The Divisional Activities Committee reported on Thematic Programming at National Meetings, BIOT, HIST, and RUBB were awarded ChemLuminary Awards.

Council on Economic and Professional Activities reported on the revamping of ACS career service.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 12 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Frank D. Blum, Councilor
