COUNCILORS REPORT ACS Council Meeting Hilton Hotel, New Orleans Wednesday, March 27, 1996 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM ¥ Presentations from the four nominees for president-elect were given. The candidates were R. Zaire (Stanford), Ned Arnett (Duke), Paul Walter (Skidmore) and Darrell Bush (Kansas). Dr. Bush and Walter were chosen to be candidates by Council ¥ President Breslow reported on his views on Graduate Education. The results of a survey will be discussed in an open forum in Orlando. ¥ President Elect Anderson reported on Congressional visits and efforts to convey the importance of scientific research to Congress. A letter that so far (5,500) people have signed will be sent to President Clinton and Congressional leaders. ¥ Chairman of the Board Shields reported on an effort to break off the Publications Division and give it its own governing board similar t what was done for Chemical Abstracts. [I attended the Society Committee on Publications, SCOP and supported this effort]. ¥ Executive Director John Crum reported on his experience with his efforts with the Visiting Committee on Publications. He also reported on enhanced industrial interactions and WWW activities. ¥ Nina McClelland of Budget an Finance reported on the financial operation of the Society. The society finished about $700,000 under budget. The dues escalator for 1997 was discussed. The committee requested that there be no dues increase for 1997. The motion carried unanimously. [There will be no increase]. ¥ Journal Prices were voted to increase on average 5.9% for member subscriptions and 6.7% for other subscriptions. Chair Joseph Dixon reported on the move to have the publications division (PUBS) create their own governing board. These changes should allow PUBS to more quickly move in a rapidly changing environment. More information will be stored on the web and available as supplementary information. The Journal of Physical Chemistry will be split into two next year. ¥ This meeting (New Orleans) had 11,095 registered as a budget of 10,500. 21% of the attendees are students. The committee recommended that the student fees for the meetings me raised to $25.00. A motion to refer the plan to various committees was defeated and the Council voted to pass the increase effective as of May 1997. The Las Vegas meeting may likely begin on Monday rather than Sunday. ¥ The billing problems associated with the new computer system have largely been resolved. ACS now has 151,523 members, an all time high. ¥ As usual I have the full reports in my office. Please let me know if you are interested in it or have any comments about ACS.
