The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. and a resolution for deceased councilors was read.
Council elected members to the Committee on Committees (Kan Anderson, Lawrence Barton, Lissa Dulany, Larry K. Krannich, and Will Lynch were elected); the Council Policy Committee (Mary Virginia Orna, Dorothy J. Phillips, Yorke E. Rhodes, Kathleen M. Schultz, and Peter J. Stang were elected); and Nominations and Elections (Frank D. Blum, Carol A. Duane, Ruth A. Hathaway, Arlyne M. Sarquis, and Pamela J. Shapiro were elected).
President Hunt reported on her activities with a special emphasis on sustainability. The American Chemical Society has joined with other societies in this effort.
President-Elect Bruce E. Bursten reported on his activities, including the joint meeting with AIChE in New Orleans in 2008.
Immediate Past-President Ann Nalley reported on her activities, including attending regional meetings and the 100th anniversary of CAS.
Chair of the Board Judith L. Benham reported on strategic planning. The vision and mission seemed to be well accepted, and these are being used to craft the plan.
Executive Director Madeleine Jacobs reported on the redesigned ACS web pages. It is believed that most of the information that visitors will read should be no more than a few mouse clicks away. The pages are supposed to be ready to go live in September.
Council passed three resolutions: (i) to continue the Committee on Nomenclature, Technology and Symbols; (ii) to change the Committee on Chemists with Disabilities to a Joint Board Council Committee; and (iii) to change the acronym of project seed.
Councilors were acknowledged for completing maximum service on various committees, as committee chairs, and for length of service on Council. (I received a plaque for 20 years of service.)
Budget and Finance reported that the 2007 year would finish with a probable $75M net from operations or $139K relative to budget. Basically, the Society is on budget.
The Society Committee on Education expressed support for high school chemistry.
There was an extensive discussion of ACS and the development of advocacy with respect to government activities.
The Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs reported on job searching. Most, especially small companies, do searches via electronic means. CEPA also will recommended revamping the chemjobs web site.
Local Section Activities (LSAC). The outstanding local sections for 2006 were announced. LSAC is supporting Internet Cafes on Chemistry.
Council approved the Petition on Local Section Affiliation that establishes local section affiliates.
Meetings and Expositions reported that the Boston meeting has 15,344 attendees with 509 booths. A survey following the Chicago meeting resulted in the 2011 meeting being moved from Chicago to Denver. Considerable discussion followed concerning the movement of the Chicago meeting. During the discussion, it was pointed out that the Chicago meeting lost a considerable amount. The Spring 2017 meeting will be in San Francisco and the Fall meeting is slated for St. Louis.
Membership Affairs reported that ACS membership is about 1,100 above last year's level. Discussion concerned a petition that will be voted on in the Spring that would convert Student Affiliate Members (really non-members) to Student Members (members). They could vote in elections, but not hold a national office.
Divisional Activities reported that a new Probationary Division on Catalysis is under consideration. Winners of Chemluminary Awards were announced.
Chemical Abstracts Service reported on new initiatives and their positive contribution to revenues.
There are 643 ACS accredited Chemistry Departments in the U.S
.The meeting was adjourned at approximately 12:20 p.m.
