COUNCILOR'S REPORT ACS Council Meeting Marriot Hotel Anaheim, CA April 5, 1995 The four candidates for President-Elect gave short reports. The Council selected Paul Anderson (Merck) and Ethan Galloway (Edison Polymer Corp.) to run for President in the fall. This year is a year for an industrial member as President. Two candidates for the committee on Nominations and Elections were selected. President Ruston spoke of his representation of the society relative to industry and government. President-Elect Breslow spoke of his activities on the public aspects of chemistry. Chairman of the Board, Walter, will meet with the new director of the Smithsonian Institution on their chemistry exhibit. The dues escalator for 1996 was calculated to be $3.00 to bring the annual dues to $99.00. Council voted to set the dues at $99.00. I voted no, but was in a substantial minority. John Crum reported on ACSŐs computer problems which he feels are behind the ACS. ACS staff has moved back into the renovated building on 16th street ahead of schedule and within budget. Michael Heylen has resigned as editor of C&E News. There were no bylaw changes voted on in Anaheim, however, two were proposed for consideration (to be voted on in Chicago), dealing with dues reductions for members: i) with family responsibilities and ii) who are unemployed. Some changes in the boundaries of local sections were made. They did not affect our local section. ACS membership now exceeds 150,000. The Publications Committee recommended increases in journal subscriptions which were approved by the board. About 11% (member) and 16% (non-member) subscription prices were set. The erosion of subscriptions (especially library) was cited as the major source of this shortfall. Supplementary materials are proposed to be available on computer networks. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 11:00 a.m. As usual, I have the full agenda available for your inspection and welcome your suggestions for improvements in the ACS. Respectively submitted, Frank D. Blum, Councilor, South Central Missouri Section of the American Chemical Society
