Cadet Caitlyn McFarland, MS&T-Student

The level of training that I received at Fort Knox in the amount of time I spent there was unlike anything I have ever experienced.  The training that we did included physical training, confidence courses, basic rifle marksmanship, combat water survival, rappelling, land navigation, heavy weapons training, obstacle course, mout training, and STX lanes.  My personal favorite was getting to work with M-16’s.  I got to fire one hundred and five rounds at a range.  During our training we were guided by a rotation of drill sergeants, second lieutenants, and non-commissioned officers.  It seemed like all of the people in charge of our training had been in the military for eight years or more.  I was able to ask a lot of questions because they were so informed.  After going through the Leaders Training Course, I now have the luxury of knowing what I want to do with my life.  The course gave me confidence in many different areas.  The Leaders Training Course has definitely prepared me for a successful MS III year.

The Army ROTC, Stonehenge Battalion is a really great program.  It offers a lot of opportunities to meet new people, pay for school, and get great leadership training.  I like that we have a smaller Battalion because it allows for more one-on-one time with the cadre so you can learn a lot more.  I feel that because we have a smaller group than other schools, I get more training that will make me a better officer and give me valuable training in the civilian world.  They also let you go do some really great things, like rappelling, shooting, and send you to some really cool schools like Air Assault, Airborne, and Mountain Warfare are just a few.  There really is no other program like it on campus, you get to know a good sized group of people really well and can count on them to help you out no matter what.

Being selected into the ROTC program was major career move for me as a prior service member. I assist in the mentoring and development process of future Army Officers and it allows me to focus on achieving my degree and enjoy some down time with my family.

I decided to join ROTC for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, I wanted to be part of the greatest military on Earth, and lead soldiers into battle to protect my country. Second, I wanted to gain more experience in the art of discipline and patience. Third, it was my best option to pay for college. I have my books, tuition, and part of my room paid. Also, I receive a $300 stipend, pending my PT test completion. I find the entire situation to be a learning experience that will help me grow both as a student and as a soldier.
